Background & Goals

The IGNITION Project, led by the University of Salford and several partner organisations, is all about exploring the power of green infrastructure in urban spaces. As part of their Living Lab, they wanted to introduce a standout feature — a living wall that would not only look great but also deliver real environmental benefits.

The idea was to demonstrate what’s possible when you bring nature into built environments: cooler spaces, cleaner air, more wildlife and a better experience for everyone using the space.

🌿Showcase nature-based solutions
Use the living wall to inspire and inform the public, students, and decision-makers.

🌿 Support biodiversity
Include plants that attract pollinators and contribute to local ecology.

🌿 Improve wellbeing
Create a green space that feels uplifting and calming for people passing through the area.

Actions & Results

We worked closely with the IGNITION team to design a living wall that could thrive in the space and tell a powerful story. Our team chose plant species for their visual appeal, low maintenance needs and ability to support biodiversity. The wall system itself is modular, sustainable and built to last – perfect for a project focused on long-term impact. Once all the plants were sourced, our planting specialists installed everything on-site, placing each species with care to match the design and ensure healthy growth.

🌿 A real-life example of green infrastructure

The wall has become a central feature of the Ignition Living Lab, helping spread the word about sustainable urban design.

🌿 Boosting local biodiversity

The planting scheme has created a small but valuable habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

🌿 A more inviting campus

The living wall brings colour, texture and a touch of nature to the space – making it feel more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

🌿 Looking great, all year round

A maintenance schedule was put in place to maximise the walls potential and keep it in excellent condition.
