The Brief:
“To support Liverpool Football Club’s sustainability programme, The Red Way, by creating new planting areas and enhancing existing ones, with the aim of increasing biodiversity and promoting wellbeing across their training grounds.”
Liverpool Football Club’s grounds span from the iconic stadium to expansive training facilities. While the entire estate is impressive, the club identified the training areas as a key focus for improvement. The existing planting was sparse and lacked visual interest, with limited colour and seasonal variation. By enhancing plant diversity, the club aimed not only to improve the aesthetic appeal of the grounds but also to create a more welcoming and uplifting environment for players and staff — while contributing positively to local biodiversity.
🌿 Improve biodiversity
🌿 Give year-round visual impact
🌿 Build a better future for our people, our planet and our communities
Guided by the site’s specific conditions, tailored planting schemes were developed for each area identified for improvement. A living wall was incorporated to create a striking visual feature, and all existing planting areas were rejuvenated. Select plants from the original landscape were carefully removed, preserved, and reintegrated into the new design to maintain continuity and reduce waste. To enhance soil structure and drainage, the ground was enriched with a blend of organic matter and repurposed spoil from the training pitches. All plants were sourced by Greeningup and delivered to site, where our planting design specialists positioned each specimen according to the new scheme, ensuring both aesthetic impact and ecological suitability.
🌿 Increased biodiversity
A more diverse plant palette attracts a wider range of pollinators, insects, and birds, supporting local ecosystems.
🌿 Enhanced visual appeal
Year-round colour and structure create a more vibrant, uplifting environment for players, staff and visitors.
🌿 Alignment with sustainability goals
